The 5th Generation Jet Fighter is a category of jet aircrafts which is used worldwide. The aircrafts of this classification are known to be the most advanced machines of next generation. The actual features of 5th generation aircrafts are quite confusing and controversial. Lockheed Martine is supposed to have all-aspect stealth, including high performance airframes, LPIR (Low Probability to Intercept Radar), armed, superior avionics features, and well integrated mechanisms, which can network with several elements in the battlefield to inform the pilots about the situation.
Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is probably the only 5th generation combat-ready fighter these days. The aircraft started serving the US Air Force in the year 2005. In 2015, the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II started serving the US Marine Corps. In 2016, the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II started serving the US Air Force. Some other 5th generation aircrafts like Sukhoi PAK FA, Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning II, TAI TFX, HAL AMCA, Shenyang J-31, Chengdu J-20, and Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin are going through several levels of development and inspection.
10. Shenyang J-31 (F-60), China
Alleged to be called as the Falcon Hawk or “Gyrfalcon”, the Shenyang J-31 is a mid-sized, twin engine 5th Generation jet aircraft which is under development stage currently by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. It is also called as J-21 Snowy Owl or F-60. It started serving on October 31, 2012. The test flight lasted 10 minutes and two J-11 fighter jets also took flight with it. It took flight with landing gear lowered. After flying Advanced Tactical Fighter in 1991, China became the second nation for having two stealth fighter jets for field testing.
9. HAL AMCA, India
The AMCA or Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft is a twin-engine, single seat, 5th generation multirole, stealth aircraft which is under development stage in India. It will be designed to accompany HAL Tejas, the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Sukhoi/HAL FGFA, as well as the Dassault Rafale. On AMCA, the unofficial design job has been conducted. The work of product design of AMCA has been conducted by the DRDO or Defense Research & Development Organization. The jet fighter is proposed to be ready to fly by 2018.
8. HAL Sukhoi PMF/FGFA, Russia and India
The HAL Sukhoi PMF is a FGFA (Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft). This 5th generation fighter jet will be developed by Russia and India. The Indian Air Force will be using this aircraft. This project is based on PAK FA (T-50). Earlier, FGFA was designated to the Indian version. Currently, the combined project is known as PMF or Perspective Multirole Fighter. After completion, the PMF will consist of 43 upgrades over T-50, such as super cruise, stealth, networking, advanced sensors, and combat avionics. In 2014, the first aircraft started testing. However, it will be serving by 2022.
7. Mitsubishi ATD-X Shinshin, Japan
Japan is going to join various remarkable militaries in the world. Currently, it is developing the 5th generation native fighter jet concept under the designation of ATD-X “Shinshin”. The ATD-X Shinshin from Mitsubishi is a 5th generation prototype fighter jet which consists of world-class stealth technology. The fighter jet is being developed for research purposes by the Technical Research & Development Institute (TRDI) of Japanese Military of Defense. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the leading contractor of this project. This aircraft is considered to be the first stealth fighter of Japan. The first flight of aircraft took place in 2014.
6. TAI TFX/F-X, Turkey
Turkey seems to be no longer ready to acquire foreign military goods. So, it has conducted programs to hold southeastern power from inside. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is developing the fifth-generation jet plane, TFX. Currently, Turkey has become one of the few countries like Russia, United States, South Korea, China and Japan that are engaged in developing fifth generation fighters.
5. KAI KF-X, South Korea
In aviation defense domain, the 5th Generation fighter jet and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle go hand in hand these days. KAI KF-X is a South Korean project which is intended to design a cutting-edge multipurpose fighter for Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) and ROKAF (Republic of Korea Air Force), conducted by Indonesia and South Korea. After FA-50, KAI KF-X is the second fighter jet development project of South Korea.
Aimed to outperform the 4th generation siblings in capabilities, the 5th generation fighter jets is a technological revolution. It is leading today with world-class engagement facilities, powerful tracking, advanced engine installations, high end avionics, composite structures, agile performance, and unmatched stealth features to rule the battlefield.
4. Sukhoi PAK FA (T-50), Russia
Being spearheaded by Sukhoi, the PAK FA is a twin-engine fighter jet is aimed to serve the Russian Air Force. The T-50 is PAK FA’s prototype. PAK FA is among the few stealth jet aircrafts across the world. The fifth generation jet fighter, PAK FA is supposed to be the successor to Su-27 and MiG-29 in Russian stock. It is going to serve just like HAL FGFA from Sukhoi for India. The T-50 conducted its flight for the first time in January 29, 2010.
3. Chengdu J-20 (Black Eagle), China
Developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group in China, Chengdu J-20 (Black Eagle) is a multipurpose, single-seat, stealth, twin engine jet fighter. Being developed for PLAAF (People’s Liberation Army Air Force), J-20 is the 5th Generation fighter jet. It took its flight for the first time on January 11, 2011. According to the Deputy Commander of PLAAF, General He Weirong, the J-20 is proposed to start serving by 2019.
2. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, USA
The Lockheed Martin F35 Lightning II features world-class and latest stealth technology. The 5th generation fighter aircraft is operated with cutting-edge computer programming as well as working with cost-effective modular approach. It is being developed in the United States. It is designed to perform reconnaissance, ground attack, and air defense with its unique stealth capacity. There are three main models of F-35 – F35A (a traditional landing and takeoff model), F-35B (vertical-landing and short takeoff model), and F35 (carrier-oriented model).
1. Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, USA
It is the leading fifth generation fighter jet in the world. The F-22 Raptor is a twin-engine, single seater, super maneuverable fighter jet which is powered by stealth technology. Originally, it was engineered as air superiority jet. But it has got some more capabilities, such as electronic warfare, ground attack, and signals intelligence. It is the best air-superiority fighter in the US. It has been evolved from its traditional concept. It is now a survivable, flexible and lethal multi-mission jet. Powered by advanced mechanism, F-22 has become the superior platform for various missions, such as surveillance, intelligence, electronic attack, and reconnaissance.
